Launching WebStart from Netscape 7.1 / Mozilla 1.4

These instructions configure Netscape 7.1 and Mozilla 1.4 to launch WebStart. Since both browsers are based on the Mozilla/5.0 engine, the configuration procedures are identical .

System Prerequisite: Java Development Kit (JDK) must be installed.

Create the "Helper Application" association between Java WebStart and Netscape/Mozilla:

  1. In Netscape/Mozilla, select Edit/Preferences.
  2. Expand the Navigator menu on the left of the pop-up window and select Helper Applications.
  3. Select New Type.
  4. In the "New Type" window, enter the following information:
    MIME Type: application/x-java-jnlp-file
    Description: WebStart
    Extension: jnlp
  5. Click the "Open it with" button and select "Choose..." In the "Choose Application Helper" pane, navigate to the javaws file (located in the $JAVAHOME/jre/javaws directory) and click "Open."
  6. Click "Ok" twice to close the "New Type" and "Helper Application" windows. Restart the browser.
